Description:

This is one of Leonardo’s earliest studies on the subject. The flapping of the wings is achieved by moving hands and feet alternately. The feet are in stirrups connected to a system of levers which lower the wing, which is then raised by other levers controlled by the hands. The sketch, which is rough and lacking in detail, conveys the excitement of the first approach to the great dream of man ruling the skies.
