Model from:
Leonardo da Vinci, Codice Atlantico, f. 1103v
carved wood, sculpted marble / polished marble
cm 71 x 65 x 44
Description:
Leonardo was very interested in the problems concerning optics which created such enthusiasm in his day, even in the field of philosophy. The page containing the sketch on which this model is based is entirely dedicated to machines for producing mirrors or lenses. This device is made up of two discs, each with its own rotating axis, and by a crank handle. By turning the handle the two round discs below are made to rotate and they are given sufficient downward pressure to polish the mirror. The disc with a lesser diameter, which contains the surface to be polished, both rotates on its own axis of rotation and revolves on the abrasive surface of the larger disc.
