Description:

Folio 855r of the Codex Atlanticus shows a single-span swing bridge with the profile of a parabolic arch held up by a lattice-work of timber struts. The bridge is anchored to one of the banks by a vertical pivot on which it can easily be turned through 90° using two manoeuvring winches installed on the ground to the side. During the opening manoeuvre, the stability of the bridge is assured by a large crate full of stones, which act as a counterweight until the bridge reaches the opposite bank. The end which is permanently on the ground is fitted with wheels or metal rollers which help it move smoothly.
