Description:
This model, reconstructed based on some drawings by Leonardo and other contemporary artist-engineers, is of the three-speed hoist devised by Filippo Brunelleschi around 1420 for the Florence Cathedral building site.
It was used for raising and lowering very heavy loads. This sizeable machine was driven by a pair of oxen and was equipped with a special mechanism which allowed the reversal of the load’s movement (up or down) without having to make the animals go round the other way.
