Description:

This model represents a machine for producing telescopic mirrors or lenses.

A wheel, to which the piece of glass or metal to be ground is fixed with putty, is mounted vertically above a bench, supported by special devices and fixed to a shaft which allows it to turn. This wheel is turned by a crank handle, attached to a rod, which simultaneously transmits reciprocating motion to a cord which supports and guides a hinged rod placed horizontally on the bench. The front end of this rod, brought into contact with the material to be polished, is fitted with a circular piece of emery (concave or convex according to which was needed) of a radius proportional to the desired focal distance. The rod is fixed to the bench with a mobile articulated joint with a pulley, through which a cord attached to a weight is run; the weight, as it exerts traction on the cord and the joint, forces the emery to remain constantly in contact with the piece being polished. The rotary movement impressed on the piece fixed to the vertical wheel and the simultaneous reciprocating movement of the emery ensure that the mirrors or lenses are ground and polished over the whole surface.
