On folio 17v of the Codex Atlanticus, Leonardo studied a method of transmitting motion to the wheel shafts of a cart, a function which in modern-day locomotion systems is performed by the differential. This system for transmitting motion, used in the crank-operated cart, is mounted in the rear area under a wooden board. The pegged wheel, turned by a crank handle, is installed horizontally over a square shaft which intersects perpendicularly with the axis of the wheels.
