Description:

In a quick sketch in folio 1078a r of the Codex Atlanticus, Leonardo depicts a hydraulic saw, defining in part the framework and the relative mechanisms. The water, as it runs through a small millrace at the base of the machine, sets the waterwheel in motion, which in turn activates a rod and crank mechanism which, by transforming the rotary motion into reciprocating motion, sets the vertical toothed blade to sawing the tree-trunk. Simultaneously, a pawl, with movements synchronised with those of the saw, engages with a ratchet wheel with orthogonal teeth, which winds up a rope tied to the trolley on which the trunk has been placed. The pulling of the rope makes the trolley proceed gradually along the rails and ensures the constant contact of the trunk with the blade. This saw, set in motion by hydraulic energy, works fully automatically.
